On this day in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses of concerns about the Roman Catholic practice of indulgences to the door of Wittenburg Chapel, which would begin the fires of the reformation that ultimately led to the breakaway of Protestant churches from the Roman church. Though Luther may not have even been converted at this point, and did not discover the doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone apart from Works for at least 2 more years, it was this act on this date that we can remember to help us celebrate the freedom that is ours in the gospel of grace. We owe much to men like Luther and Calvin, and so today, let us celebrate the gospel of God’s sovereign grace that their writings and work helped preserve for us.
